Illuminations and Illustrations

 

In the days of old, books were painstakingly copied by hand.  To bring the beauty of the sacred texts to life, the monk-scribes would decorate the tomes with elaborate drawings and paintings.  It was almost seen as bringing the light of understanding to the words within - hence the term "illuminator" for these early illustrators.
